On 25 August 2016, self-driving taxis began picking up members from the general public for the first time. Starting with a fleet of six vehicles, riders in Singapore are able to hire "robo-cars" and travel within a 6.5-square-km (2.5-square-mile) district called "one-north". While self-driving cars have been tested on roadways for many years now, this is the first time an autonomous taxi service has been made available to the public. nuTonomy, the software firm behind this service, believes that self-driving taxis could one day reduce the number of cars in Singapore from 900,000 to 300,000.
