Iron currently accounts for approximately 0.11% of all matter in the universe. It is the sixth most common element overall and the most abundant metal. It accounts for around 0.1% of the Sun and around 22% of meteorite material found on Earth. Iron makes up around 0.006% of a human being.
The most common elements in the universe in order are hydrogen, helium, oxygen, carbon, neon, iron and nitrogen.
Owing to stellar nucleosynthesis, the chemical make up of the universe is constantly changing, with more heavier and fewer lighter elements over time.
