The longest species of conger eel (family Congridae) is the European conger eel Conger conger, native to the northeast Atlantic, including the Mediterranean Sea. This species has a maximum recorded length of 3 m and a maximum recorded weight of approximately 110 kg, although most specimens are around 2–25 kg. Females are much larger than males, boasting an average length of 2 m at sexual maturity, whereas males at sexual maturity have an average length of only 1.2 m.
The taxonomic family Congridae contains no fewer than 30 different genera, of which the most familiar, Conger, constituting the "true" conger eels, contains 15 different species (although some specialists only recognise 14). All are marine but most are poorly known, including their life-cycles, during which they metamorphose from small leaf-like leptocephali into fully formed eels.
