The world's heaviest species of moray eel is the giant moray eel Gymnothorax javanicus, native to the Indo-Pacific region, where it lives in lagoons and on the outer slopes of coral reefs. It weighs up to 30 kg, and attains a total length of up to 3 m.
Being both carnivorous and very large, thereby constituting an apex predator, this species can be notably aggressive and has been implicated in several attacks upon scuba divers, some of which were unprovoked. It hunts at night, spending the day mostly hidden in crevices.
