At the 2015 EVO Championship Series on 17–19 July 2015 in Las Vegas, USA, Gonzalo "ZeRo" Barrios (Chile) recorded a historical "perfect" victory against 1,926 other gamers in the Super Smash Bros. for Wii U tournament. On his route to the final, the hotshot gamer won all of his 10 "best-of-three round" sets and his one "best-of-five" winner's final without losing a single round. ZeRo then took control of Diddy Kong as he defeated the Sheik-player Mr. R (Netherlands) in a dramatic "best of five" grand final, this time achieving a perfect aggregate score of three rounds to zero. Super Smash Bros. for Wii U tournament matches are played with gamers being given two "stocks" (lives) per round. If they lose both, which involves their character being knocked off the fighting stage, the round is over. While ZeRo lost stocks during his run, he never dropped a single round. ZeRo said of winning a GWR title: "It's just crazy. I never thought I would be a part of this prestigious book and it's something I will definitely share in the future as a great accomplishment. I'm really happy."
ZeRo achieved this feat as part of his longest winning streak in Super Smash Bros. tournaments record, which he set between November 2014 and October 2015. During that time, he won 56 consecutive tournaments. ZeRo said of his EVO win: "It's my greatest accomplishment in my career. Not only is it my biggest win, but at the time I won this, it was during my win streak. Everybody aimed to defeat me here and I came out on top in a perfect fashion defeating the world's best players. It's also my first EVO win, which makes it something I'll always remember. Furthermore EVO is the biggest fighting game tournament in the world every year, making it THE win in my record."
ZeRo had fought as Sheik throughout the tournament but switched to Diddy Kong in the final. He told GWR: "I used Sheik for the entire tournament but grand finals where I used Diddy Kong. At the time, Sheik was considered one of the strongest characters in the game. I didn't want to make EVO grand finals a Sheik mirror, so I decided to use my old main Diddy Kong who had been nerfed heavily at that point, to not just make the finals more interesting for everyone watching, but to also give our game a proper show as to why it's exciting to play and watch. Diddy Kong didn't have a good match up vs Sheik at the time, but it's a match up I personally felt comfortable with. All of that in account, I went for it. The last kill of the set is also one of the most epic ways I've ever won a tournament in my career. One of those magic comebacks."
