The 1985 NES classic Super Mario Bros. has developed one of the most notoriously competitive speed-running scenes. With its top gamers now achieving times of near perfection, other players are now trying the game blindfolded instead. In a video uploaded to YouTube on 27 January 2016, the Japanese gamer "きらめきでどーだい" (translated to “KIRAMEKIDEDODAI”) finished the platformer in an incredible 14 minutes 46 seconds relying predominately on audio cues and a counting strategy to determine his position in the levels. The player had reportedly practised the game blindfolded for three months before being the first person to complete the game this way.

The same gamer later broke a record for the fastest blindfolded completion of Super Mario World, although his record lasted less than a month.
