The longest talons of any living species of eagle are the back talons of the South American harpy eagle Harpia harpyja, native in particular to Brazil, which grow up to 13 cm long, meaning that these are even longer than the claws of many grizzly bears! In addition, its legs can be as thick as the wrists of a small child, both features readily revealing just how powerful this eagle species is.
Indeed, the harpy eagle's feet can exert a pressure of 42 kg/cm², and adult females, much bigger than males, have been recorded lifting prey individuals weighing as much as themselves (an adult female harpy typically weighs around 6–9 kg), and they frequently carry off prey weighing up to 7 kg, such as sloths and large monkeys.
