The first stadium used for both the Winter Olympic Games and the FIFA World Cup is the Fisht Olympic Stadium situated in Sochi, Russia. It hosted the 2014 Winter Olympic games on 7–23 February 2014 and is set to host six games at the 2018 FIFA World Cup from 15 June to 7 July 2018.
The stadium is undergoing renovations to be converted from an Olympic stadium to a football stadium – the technical areas used for the opening and closing ceremonies will be replaced by temporary stands to increase capacity to up to 47,700.
The word "Fisht" translates as "white-head" and was named after Mount Fisht in the Caucasus mountain range.
Sochi is not the first city to host the Winter Olympics and FIFA World Cup; that distinction goes to Sapporo, Japan, which hosted the 1938 Winter Olympics and 2002 FIFA World Cup, but different stadia were used. The only other city to host both is Turin, but like Sapporo two different stadia were used at each sporting event.
