The first chronograph was made in 1816 by Louis Moinet (France) and is now owned by Ateliers Louis Moinet (Switzerland), of Saint-Blaise, Switzerland, as verified on 1 June 2016.

For almost two centuries Louis Moinet's chronograph had lain forgotten in the private collection of a European prince. Eventually the chronograph was rediscovered and in 2012 it was sold to Jean-Marie Schaller, CEO of Ateliers Louis Moinet, at a Christie's auction in Geneva, Switzerland. Moinet is also recognised as the father of high frequency time measurement, where his chronograph ran at an impressive speed of 30 Hz (216,000 vibrations per hour). This achievement wouldn't be rivaled until exactly a century later.
