The first game of basketball was created by Dr James Naismith (Canada) and played in Springfield, Massachusetts, USA, on 20 January 1892.

The game was designed to keep track and field athletes fit during the winter months. Dr Naismith wrote 13 simple rules for the game, 9 of which have been modified and kept in today's modern game.
