MS Dhoni (India) has stumped 140 batsmen in his international career: 89 in One-Day Internationals, 38 in Test matches and 13 in Twenty20 Internationals. Dhoni equalled and then took the record from Sri Lanka's Kumar Sangakkara when he claimed his 139th and 140th stumping in a Twenty20 International against Australia at Melbourne Cricket Ground, Victoria, on 29 January 2016.
Indian captain Dhoni stumped Australian batsman Glenn Maxwell off the bowling of Yuvraj Singh to equal Sangakkara's record of 139 international stumpings, and took the record by stumping James Faulkner off the bowling of Ravindra Jadeja.
Dhoni took a catch but did not make any stumpings in the third and final match of the series, in Sydney, Australia, on 31 January 2016. India won the series 3–0.
Dhoni's international career started in 2004. Since then, he has claimed a total of 680 dismissals in One-Day Internationals, Test matches and Twenty20 Internationals combined (two more than Sangakkara but still well short of Mark Boucher's 998 dismissals for South Africa and Adam Gilchrist's 905 dismissals for Australia). Dhoni has taken 540 catches since 2004 (one more than Sangakkara but behind Boucher with 952 catches, Gilchrist with 813 catches and Australia's Ian Healy with 560 catches). As of 31 January 2016, Dhoni had played 420 international matches (491 innings).
To effect a stumping, a wicket-keeper must dislodge the bails with the ball with the batsman out of his ground, i.e., in front of the line on the batting crease.
