Greek philosopher, Archytas was born in 428 BCE in Tarentum, Magna Graecia (which is now southern Italy), and is popularly credited with the invention of the first ever robot – the "Flying Pigeon". Archytas constructed his robotic bird from wood and an animal's bladder, using steam to power its movements. The bird was launched from a pivot bar, and was documented to fly about 200 metres (656 feet) before it ran out of steam. This makes Archytas' experiment not just the first known robot, but was also one of the first recorded instances of a scientist researching how birds fly.
