Kristýna Plíšková (Czech Republic) hit 31 aces in a three-set loss to Puerto Rico's Monica Puig in the second round of the Australian Open in Melbourne on 20 January 2016. Plíšková was eliminated 6–4, 6–7, 7–9 after squandering five match points.

Plíšková hit seven aces in set 1, 12 in set 2 and 12 in set 3, with five double faults across the three sets. She won 80% of her first-serve points (52 out of 65 points).

Her 31st and final ace was the second point of her final service game, with the third set tied at seven games apiece.

The match lasted 2 hr 20 min.

The previous record for a WTA (Women's Tennis Association) match was 27 aces, set by Germany's Sabine Lisicki – who has the fastest serve in the women's game (131 mph, or 210.8 km/h) – in a 6–1, 7–6 win against Belinda Bencic at the Aegon Classic in Birmingham, UK, on 17 June 2015.

Puig wrote her own name in the record books seven months later when she won the Olympic women's singles title in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on 13 August 2016 – Puerto Rico's first ever Olympic gold medal.
