The fastest mixed pair in open-class category on the Mid-Pacific east to west route are Riaan Manser and Vasti Geldenhuys (both South Africa), who rowed the distance of 2,400 miles (3,865 km; 2,088 nautical miles) from Monterey, California, to O'ahu, Hawaii, USA, in 39 days 4 hours 46 minutes, at an average speed of 2.22 knots, between 15 July and 23 August 2016 on board Honeymoon.
The couple decided to row across the Pacific Ocean for their honeymoon. In 2014 they became the first pair to row the Atlantic from Africa to North American mainland and, with the 2016 Mid Pacific row, became the second mixed pair to row on two oceans. The first mixed pair were Cathleen and Curtis Saville (both USA), who rowed the Atlantic east to west in 1981 and the Pacific east to west in 1984–85.
