Saser Kangri II (7,518 m; 24,665 ft), located in India, was first climbed by Mark Richey, Steve Swenson and Freddie Wilkinson (all USA) on 24 August 2011. Until then it was the world's second highest unclimbed mountain after Kangkar Pünzum (aka Gangkhar Puensum) in Bhutan, where climbing remains prohibited, and the highest unclimbed mountain where climbing was not prohibited. In the early Eighties, a Japanese expedition ascended the western summit of Saser Kangri II, while the higher east summit had remained unclimbed. There are many other mountains in the Eastern Karakoram which remain unclimbed.
