Prized for its intense deep blue colour, lapis lazuli is a semi-precious stone whose main ingredient is the mineral lazurite. The largest lapis lazuli mine in the world is the Sary-Sang deposit, at an elevation of around 3,500 m in the Kokcha Valley in Badakhshan Provice, Afghanistan. An estimated 9,000 kg per year is recovered from this mine.
