The most appearances in Copa America tournaments by a football player is eight and was first achieved by Ángel Romano (Uruguay) in 1916, 1917, 1919, 1920, 1921, 1922, 1924 and 1926. This feat was equalled by Álex Aguinaga (Ecuador) in 1987, 1989, 1991, 1993, 1995, 1999, 2001 and 2004.
Aguinaga played 25 matches in total; his final Copa América game was a 2–1 defeat against Mexico in Piura, Peru, on 13 July 2004. His first match had been a 1–1 draw with Peru in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on 4 July 1987. Romano played 23 games in total starting with a 4–0 win over Chile in Buenos Aires on 2 July 1916 and ending with a 6–1 win over Paraguay in Santiago, Chile, on 1 November 1926 as Uruguay won their sixth title.
