Many of the most lucrative productions on Broadway are based on existing material – The Lion King, Wicked, The Phantom of the Opera, Les Misérables, Chicago and Cats, for example, are adaptations of novels or poems, while Mamma Mia, Jersey Boys and Rock of Ages are "jukebox" musicals that repurpose existing songs. The highest-grossing musical that can be considered fully original is The Book of Mormon which, while taking its name from a sacred text of the Latter Day Saint movement, is nevertheless an original creation with book, lyrics and music by Trey Parker, Matt Stone and Robert Lopez (all USA). Since previewing at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre on 24 February 2011, it has grossed $316,574,288 (£208.58 million), making it the 10th highest-grossing show in Broadway history.
The Book of Mormon is a religious satire that tells the story of two Latter Day Saint missionaries – Elders Price and Cunningham – who travel to a village in Uganda to share the titular sacred text. The musical's co-creators Parker and Stone are best known for their animated comedy TV series South Park, while composer Lopez enjoyed success with the Broadway musical Avenue Q.
