On 24 April 1918, the first tank-versus-tank battle took place at Villers Bretonneux, France, when three British Mark IV tanks met three German A7V Sturmpanzerwagen. It was difficult for the British crews, as the gunners were still suffering from a mustard gas attack and were unable to see the enemy well enough to engage properly. Two British tanks suffered damage from enemy shells and withdrew but the third, armed with a 6-pounder gun, halted to give the gunner a stable platform for a shot. The German A7V keeled over and was counted as the first tank kill. Although hit, it later transpired that the German tank had simply run down a steep bank and keeled over.
