Awarded annually since 1956, the Shogakukan Manga Awards are considered the most prestigious prizes in the manga world. They are named after the publisher Shogakukan, which also sponsors the event. Initially there was only one "general" award category, but prizes for shōnen, shōjo, and children's (jidō) manga were added in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Mangaka Naoki Urasawa and Akimi Yoshida have both won the prize three times, Urasawa in the general category (35th, 46th, 48th) and Yoshida once in the general (61st) and twice in shōjo (29th, 47th). Mangaka duo Fujio Fujiko also won three times, twice in the juried competition (8th, general; 27th, children's) and a jury special award for "Doraemon" (65th).
