The world's most southerly species of lizard is the Magellanic iguana Liolaemus magellanicus, which inhabits the archipelago of Tierra del Fuego, situated at the southernmost tip of Argentina in South America.
There are more than 225 currently described species within the genus Liolaemus (although there may be as many again still awaiting discovery and description). All are found only in South America, and collectively they constitute a dominant portion of the total lizard spectrum occurring in southern South America.
