The first ever podcast consisted of an interview conducted by American TV and radio broadcaster Christopher Lydon with software developer Dave Winer. Winer was one of the first people to maintain a blog on the internet, and helped develop much of the enabling technology – including the ability to automatically deliver audio files to blog subscribers. Using Winer’s distribution system, Lydon released the audio interview to his blog in July 2003 – making it the first podcast. The actual name "podcast" wasn’t coined until February 2004, by British technology journalist Ben Hammersley. It was a portmanteau of "pod" (from Apple’s then relatively new iPod portable audio player) and "cast" (from "broadcast").
