In c. 250 BC, Ancient Greek physician Erasistratus of Ceos discovered that pulse rates increase when people are telling lies. This discovery arose from his comprehensive studies of the heart and circulatory system, among other important works on the nervous system and bodily functions. It is said that he used this technique to know when his patients were telling lies about their symptoms and whether or not they were faithfully following his prescribed treatments.
