The Gears of War series became famous for its super-macho approach to action, and heroes with arms and necks the size of a small car. It wasn't until Gears of War 3, and the introduction of Samantha Byrne in September 2011, that the battle against the Locust changed its approach to equality. Samantha was voiced by Claudia Black, best known for sci-fi TV shows such as Farscape and Stargate, and for the Vin Diesel movie Pitch Black.
