Male (bull) southern elephant seals (Mirounga leonina) have an average length of 5 m (16 ft 4 in) and weigh up to 3,500 kg (7,720 lb). The largest carnivores overall, and also the largest pinnipeds, they dwarf even the polar bear (Ursus maritimus) – the largest terrestrial carnivore – and are found in the sub-Antarctic islands.
