First fine for littering from space

- When
- 11 July 1979
On 11 July 1979 the defunct US space station Skylab re-entered Earth’s atmosphere and disintegrated. Large chunks of the station survived and crashed in Western Australia. Officials at the Australian Shire of Esperance imposed a $400 fine on NASA for littering, which NASA never paid. The fine was eventually paid on NASA’s behalf in 2009 by US radio host Scott Barley, who raised the money from his radio audience in time for the 30th anniversary of Skylab’s demise.
