The oldest operational narrow-gauge steam locomotive is Prince on the Ffestiniog Railway in Porthmadog, Wales. It was built to a gauge of 597 mm (1 ft 11 1/2 inches) in 1863.
Built by George England & Co. of London England, to a gauge of 597 mm (1 ft 11 1/2 inches) in 1863, the locomotive was delivered to the Festiniog Railway Co in January 1864. It was allocated their running number "2" and named "The Prince" in honour of the Prince of Wales, later to become King Edward VII (1840–1910). The name was shortened to "Prince" during an overhaul in 1892.
It was rebuilt and improved many times in over 150 years of operation. The most recent overhaul, in 2012/13, should see this veteran running on narrow-gauge rails for many years to come.
