The longest purpose-designed motor racing circuit in use is Nürburgring in Nürburg, Germany. First constructed in 1927, the current version of the “Nordschleife” (“north loop”) measures 12.93 miles (20.81 km), while the 3.199-mile (5.148-km) revised version of the “Sudschleife” (“south loop”) was formed in 1984. When combined together, as for the annual 24-hour endurance event, the track measures 16.123 miles (25.947 km) in length, and has more than 180 corners. Famous for being open to public drivers who can pay to lap the Nordschleife, this highly dangerous tree-lined track claims between three and 12 lives each year, and was described by Formula One driver Jackie Stewart as being the “Green Hell”.
