The largest of the six species of caiman alive today is the black caiman Melanosuchus niger. Native to rivers and swamps in the Amazon basin, including parts of Brazil and neighbouring countries, this alligator-related crocodilian can in the case of old males sometimes exceed 5 m long and 400 kg in weight.
