The longest castle siege in history was that of Ishiyama Hongan-ji castle in what is today Osaka, Japan. The cathedral fort first came under attack from Oda Nobunaga in August 1570, but the defending Ikkō-ikki warrior monks under Abbot Kōsa held out for a decade until August 1580, when the complex was finally burned to the ground. The site was then reused for Osaka castle.
