The earliest-known fish capable of leaping out of the water and gliding over the surface for a distance before re-entering the water is Potanichthys xingyiensis. This recently described species lived in what is now China, during the Mid-Triassic Period, 235–242 million years ago. It was only very distantly related to the modern-day flying fishes (which, despite their name, glide rather than fly over the water surface).
