The highest mountain in Antarctica is Mount Vinson, whose peak reaches 4,892 metres (16,050 feet) above sea level. It is part of the Sentinel Range of the Ellsworth Mountains around 1,200 kilometres (745 miles) from the South Pole. It is part of the famous Seven Summits and was first climbed by a combined team from the American Alpine Club and the National Science Foundation in 1966.
