The walkie-talkie is a perennial favourite of young and old the world over. It has been used as a toy, for casual communication and as a life-saving device. The Motorola SCR-300 introduced in 1940 was a portable radio transceiver used by US Signal Corps in World War II. This backpack-mounted unit was the first two-way radio nicknamed a "walkie-talkie". Motorola was to produce nearly 50,000 of the SCR-300 units during the course of the war. In the 1950s, a great many walkie-talkie units were donated to "ham" radio clubs as part of the US government's Public Safety Radio initiatives.
