Out of approximately 200 species of moray eel, of cosmopolitan marine and estuarine distribution, the longest species is the slender giant moray eel Strophidon sathete. This superficially snake-like fish of Indo-West Pacific occurrence can grow to 4 m in length, but as its common name suggests, it is very slender in build.
