After the success of the SNES console, Nintendo didn’t want to take any chances with the N64 successor. They made sure Super Mario 64 (Nintendo, 1996), the first 3D Mario game, was available at the June 1996 launch to guarantee a good start to their 64-bit wonder. Super Mario 64 was seen as a groundbreaking leap forward in videogames. It eventually sold 11 million copies and was described by Electric Playground as “the standard by which almost all other games are measured”.
