The cover of America's prestigious Time magazine is usually reserved for presidents, world events and Hollywood stars, but in November 1999 the cover of the magazine was taken over by Pokémon, the first time that a single videogame title had been given that honour. The article warned parents that "Pokémania" might be addictive and bad for children. Videogames had appeared on the cover only twice before: in 1981 as a generic illustration and in 1997 as a collage of different game-related images.
