In October 2012, SingStar launched as a free app on the PlayStation. Once the app is installed, players can play tracks from the game discs or tracks purchased via SingStore, which has a catalogue of more than 3,000 songs. In December 2012, Microsoft released its own free singing app – Karaoke. Instead of paying for individual tracks, players purchase "Karaoke Passes" through Xbox live, with durations ranging from two hours to 30 days, during which time users are granted unlimited access to their archive of 8,000-plus songs. Since launching the free-to-play app, SingStar has nearly doubled its online user base, acquiring 1.5m new users compared to the 2m it had attracted in the five years prior to the app launch.
