The Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) is the international name for the Famicom, which was released in Japan on 15 July 1983, making it the first 8-bit console. The “bit” of a machine refers to the speed of the microprocessor inside it, and an 8-bit processor can access 8 bits of data in a single operation. The NES CPU (central processing unit) core is made by Ricoh and based on the 6502 processor. In the NTSC-region NES, the RP2A03 chip contains the CPU and APU (accelerated processing unit); in the PAL-region NES, the CPU and APU are contained within the RP2A07 chip.
