Test match debutant Ashton Agar (Australia) rewrote the record books when he plundered 98 runs in the opening Test of the 2013 Ashes series against England at Trent Bridge, Nottingham, UK, on 11 July. Agar's astonishing, 101-ball knock featured 12 fours and two sixes and rescued Australia from a perilous 117 for 9. Agar, 19, and specialist batsman Phillip Hughes (81 not out) also set the Test record for the highest 10th-wicket partnership, helping themselves to 163 runs in 31.1 overs. Agar (b. Melbourne, 14 October 1993) broke the record set by West Indies number 11 Tino Best, who hit 95 runs against England at Edgbaston, Birmingham, UK, on 10 June 2012. No number 11 has ever made a century in a Test match.

The previous 10th-wicket record of 151 was set by Brian Hastings and Richard Collinge for New Zealand against Pakistan at Auckland, New Zealand, in 1973. It was equalled by Azhar Mahmood and Mushtaq Ahmed for Pakistan against South Africa in Rawalpindi, Pakistan, in 1997.

The previous best Test score by a debutant number 11 was Warwick Armstrong's 45 not out for Australia against England at Melbourne, Australia, in 1902.

The previous best Test score by an Australian number 11 was Glenn McGrath's 61 against New Zealand in 2004.

According to ESPN Cricinfo, at the time of Agar's innings the average score for number 11 batsmen in the 131-year history of Test cricket stood at 8.56 runs.

Despite Agar's second-day heroics, England won a thrilling First Test by 14 runs on day five, 14 July 2013.

Retired Australian fast bowler Brett Lee's reaction to Agar's innings on Twitter: "This Agar is a freak of nature."
