Junko Tabei (Japan, b. 22 Sep 1939, d. 20 October 2016) became the first woman to climb the Seven Summits (the highest peak on each continent) when she topped Puncak Jaya (or Carstensz Pyramid, the highest mountain in Australasia) on 28 June 1992, having climbed the highest mountains in Asia (Everest), Europe (Mont Blanc), Africa (Kilimanjaro), South (Aconcagua) and North America (Denali), Antarctica (Vinson) and Mount Kosciuszko (Australia) between 16 May 1975 and 23 November 1991. She then completed both the Kosciusko and Carstensz lists by summitting Elbrus – included in both lists as Europe’s highest mountain - on 28 July 1992.
Junko had summitted Everest on 16 May 1975, the first ascent of Mount Everest by a woman, and Mont Blanc on 13 August 1979.
Some consider Elbrus to be part of Asia, therefore making Mont Blanc the highest mountain in Europe. This record takes this view and recognizes that Junko Tabei achieved the Seven Summits with Puncak Jaya, one month before topping Elbrus on 28 July 1992.
