En route home – and still nearly 320,000 km (198,800 miles) from Earth – Worden performed the first ever space walk that was not in Low Earth Orbit, to retrieve film cassettes from cameras in the scientific instrument module on the spacecraft. His EVA, on 5 August 1971, lasted for 39 minutes.
The first spacewalk of any kind was by Lt-Col. Alexei Arkhipovich Leonov (b. 20 May 1934) from Voskhod 2 on 18 March 1965.
