The most wins of the World Rugby Player of the Year award is three, by Richie McCaw (New Zealand) in 2006, 2009 and 2010; and Dan Carter (New Zealand) in 2005, 2012 and 2015.

Formerly known as the IRB Player of the Year, the award was instituted in 2001 and recognises the outstanding performer in rugby union international matches over the calendar year. McCaw was nominated eight times, also a record.
