On 15 August 1947 the partition of British India triggered the largest ever mass migration, uprooting over 18 million people. The partition was drawn up along religious lines and created the nation states of India and Pakistan. Pakistan was further divided to the East into western Punjab (later Punjab Province) and East Bengal. In 1971 East Bengal became Bangladesh. The partition of British India created a great deal of instability, some of which has yet to be resolved.
