On 4 March 1899 Tropical Cyclone Mahina struck Bathurst Bay, Queensland, Australia. The associated storm surge, a rise in sea water level caused by a combination of high winds and low pressure, was reported to be as high as 13 m, with fish and dolphins found stranded on the top of 15-m-high cliffs. The storm surge was responsible for the deaths of more than 400 people.
