The world's largest living bird of prey species is the Andean condor (Vultur gryphus). Native to the Andes and South America's western coasts, this huge New World vulture, or cathartid, has a wingspan of up to 3.2 m (10 ft 6 in), and can weigh up to 15 kg (33 lb) in the male (which are generally heavier than the females).
By weight and wingspan, the Andean condor surpasses its northern cousin the California condor (Gymnogyps californianus), with a weight of up to 12 kg (26 lb) and maximum wingspan of about 3 m (9 ft 9 in).
