Old World or true vultures are only very distantly related to New World vultures or cathartids (which are more closely related to storks than to other birds of prey). The smallest Old World vulture is the hooded vulture Necrosyrtes monachus, native to much of sub-Saharan Africa. Measuring 62–72 cm long and weighing just 1.5–2.6 kg, this species has a very modest wingspan of only 1.6–1.7 m, and the male is slightly smaller than the female.
