The world's first and largest fly-in community – a private group of houses with exclusive access to airplane hangers and a runway, also known as an airpark – is Spruce Creek, near Daytona Beach in Florida, USA. On a 550-hectare (1,350-acre) site, over 5,000 residents share 1,300 homes, 700 aircraft hangars, a 1.22-km (0.76-mile) runway and 22.5 km (14 miles) of paved taxiways, as well as fuelling and repair facilities. The brainchild of former US Navy jet pilot McKinley Conway, Spruce Creek was first developed during the 1970s and today is home to 401 single-engine, 140 multi-engine and six jet aircraft, plus three helicopters and four ultra-lights. The gated community also contains a championship golf course and 24-hour private security patrols.
