Microsoft's 2014 acquisition of Mojang for $2.5 billion (£1.6 million) put paid to the developer's indie credentials, but Minecraft had already sold 60 million copies. Its non-console sales alone are nearly twice the population of Sweden – homeland of Markus Persson.

Despite only counting the total copies shipped during Mojang's tenure as an indie developer, the 60 million figure still eclipses the closest indie rival, Garry's Mod, by over 43 million copies.
