Two matches at the ICC World Twenty20 held in Sri Lanka in 2012 were decided by a "super over", which comes into play when both sides finish their allotted 20 overs on the same score. The first men's Twenty20 World Cup match to be decided in this way took place at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Kandy, Sri Lanka, on 27 September, when the hosts posted 13 runs for one wicket in their "super over". Their opponents, New Zealand, then replied with seven runs for one wicket to lose by six runs. Earlier, both teams scored 174 runs in 20 overs to set up the one-over eliminator.
The second match to feature a "super over" at the 2012 World Cup also involved New Zealand and took place at the same venue on 1 October 2012. New Zealand (17 runs without loss) were beaten by the West Indies (18 runs without loss) in the one-over eliminator after both teams scored 139 in their 20 overs. Consequently, New Zealand were knocked out of the competition, with the West Indies progressing to the Super Eights. The West Indies went on to win the tournament, beating Sri Lanka by 36 runs in the final on 7 October 2012.
