Powerlifter Haidong Zhang (China) added the -82.5 kg world record to his existing -75 kg world best (set at the 2000 Paralympic Games) when he lifted 248.5 kg in Kunming, China, on 18 May 2007. Competitors are classified by bodyweight alone in Paralympic powerlifting, so athletes with different impairments compete for the same medals. The Paralympic -82.5 kg record - 243 kg - was set by Jong Chul Park (South Korea) in Sydney, Australia, on 27 October 2000.
